Dear APAGS Members,
We recently got one step closer to obtaining the student right to vote. Our voices matter more now than ever before, and as your APAGS Chair-Elect, I would work closely with you to address our next challenges. In my leadership roles at the departmental (Georgia State University), state (Georgia Psychological Association of Graduate Students, Mental Health America of Georgia), and national (APAGS Science Committee, Student Debt Workforce Co-Chair) levels, I have advocated with members of Congress for improved access to healthcare, pushed for increased departmental funding for graduate students, assisted in large-scale grassroots lobbying efforts, and led initiatives to strengthen the recruitment of underrepresented students into graduate psychology programs.
As your Chair-Elect, I will continue leading by:
Advocating for the protection of graduate student rights: In 2015, APAGS released a Position Statement on the rights of Psychology graduate students to equitable and respectful treatment. Yet, for many, these rights are not met. I will push APAGS to formally advocate for implementation of our non-negotiable rights.
Positioning psychologists as scientific leaders: Challenge APAGS/APA to continue advocating for increased funding for psychological research, secure additional scientific training for the next generation of psychological scientists, and utilize psychological science to speak truth to power on the critical social justice matters of our time.
Promoting leadership opportunities for underrepresented students: Implement tools to increase recruitment and retention of diverse student leaders and facilitate the pipeline from graduate student leaders to leadership in the workforce.
Addressing the student debt crisis: Continue the work of the Student Debt Workgroup and encourage APAGS/APA to lobby for debt forgiveness programs, interest rate reductions, and increased grant funding for psychology graduate students.
Together, we will ensure that every student voice is heard.
Thank you for your vote,
